Southborough, MA - Fire Chief
The Town of Southborough, MA (approx. pop. 10,000) is seeking long term leadership from a creative and innovative chief fire officer. External Executive Fire Officers are encouraged to apply. The community is located 25 miles west of Boston and 15 miles east of Worcester with an area of approximately 16 square miles. The Town is primarily a suburban residential community with areas of commercial development consisting of mostly business offices and light manufacturing. There are 3 major highways that pass through the community.
The Town is committed to support its public safety departments and a new 20-million-dollar public safety complex is under construction. The new Fire Chief will have the opportunity to finish this project and accept/occupy this new state of the art facility. Prior experience in this type of project management is desirable.
The Southborough Fire Department is a full-service fire/rescue and EMS combination department made up of a staff of 22 career fire/EMS personnel, and 6 on-call fire/EMS personnel of which 26 are EMT’s. In addition, the department has one administrative support position. The department operates from one fully staffed station. The department provides EMS services at the paramedic level. There is also a full time Fire Prevention Officer. There are a total of approximately 1,300 fire and EMS calls per year. The current annual operating budget of the Fire Department is $2,104,110.
The Fire Chief is appointed by the Board of Selectmen but receives administrative direction and supervisory oversight by the Town Administrator. The Fire Chief is a “strong chief”, appointed under the provisions of Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 48, Section 42. The Fire Chief also serves as the Emergency Management Director for the Town. Candidates must have strong leadership and managerial skills combined with excellent interpersonal and communications skills. A proven, successful record of experience in progressively responsible supervisory, administrative and command assignments is also required. The Fire Chief is required to reside within 15 miles (border to border) from the Town of Southborough, within eighteen months of appointment.
Minimum qualifications include: Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Public Administration or a related field from an accredited university or college, Master’s Degree highly preferred; 7-10 years of municipal fire/rescue experience including at least 7 years in a supervisory, command position as an officer in a fire department with significant administrative responsibilities. Massachusetts and/or National EMT certification. National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer and Massachusetts Chief Fire Officer credentialing preferred.
Candidates must have demonstrated experience and skill within the following critical areas: budgeting, establishing and maintaining harmonious and effective relationships with subordinates, the general public, and town officials, incident command, emergency management and management and leadership roles within a union environment.
Salary up to $150,000 subject to negotiation, depending on qualifications.
