Plaistow, NH - Fire Chief
The Town of Plaistow, New Hampshire (pop. 7,900) is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Fire Chief. Located on the MA-NH border this community is just 20 miles from the Seacoast and 40 miles to Boston. Covering about 10 square miles, its booming retail, commercial and industrial base makes Plaistow a “destination” community.
This combination Fire Rescue Department is staffed with 4 full-time and 31 on-call fire/EMS personnel. The Department responds to approx. 1,200 fire/EMS calls per year and has a current budget of approx. $650,000. The Chief is expected to perform all the usual administrative and management duties of a traditional fire chief and actively respond to incidents as a “working chief.” The Fire Chief is appointed by and reports to the Town Manager.
Candidates must have strong leadership and managerial abilities combined with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must work well with elected and appointed officials, Police personnel, Emergency Management Director and the public. Minimum qualifications include: Associate Degree in fire science or a related field from an accredited university or college, 10 years of demonstrated, progressively responsible experience in municipal fire/rescue services and at least 3 years of experience as a command officer in a comparable or larger organization. Must possess or be willing to obtain New Hampshire/National EMT certification.
Since it is expected that the Chief will be a first responder, candidates must reside within a reasonable distance to be viable. Salary range to $80,000 plus excellent benefits and participation in the NH Retirement System. An additional stipend is available for appointment as the Emergency Management Director.
