Rutland VT - Public Works Commissioner

The City of Rutland, Vermont (16,500 pop.), seeks a progressive, experienced Commissioner of Public Works to lead its Public Works Department. The Department of Public Works is responsible for City roads, bridges, culverts, water treatment & distribution, wastewater collection & treatment, stormwater management and the management of the 4,000 acre City forest & watershed. Located in southwest Vermont just an hour from Massachusetts and 20 miles from the New York border, Rutland is the third largest city in Vermont. The Commissioner is appointed by and works directly for the Mayor. This position works collaboratively with the Board of Alderman through committees and departmental updates. Presently the Commissioner oversees a department of 50 fulltime employees with an operating budget of $5.6 million dollars.
BA/BS in Business Management, Engineering, Public Administration, or closely related field strongly preferred; 5 years’ experience, 3 in supervisory/administrative role. Extensive senior level public works experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Experience in operation and maintenance, project management, and service delivery, with team-orientation and customer-focus essential. Strong budget and management skills, team building, and enthusiasm toward creative solutions to meet Community needs. Salary range $81,000 -$92,000 starting salary commensurate with qualifications.
