MERRIMACK NH - FIRE CHIEF

The Town of Merrimack (Population 26,490), incorporated in 1746 is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Fire Chief. Located in Southeastern New Hampshire, the Department covers a response area of 33.4 square miles and operates from three stations. The Department is an ISO Class 5/9. The organization employs 44 career firefighters which includes 2 Assistant Chiefs, 4 Captains, 4 Lieutenants and 32 firefighters. The Department also has 6 volunteer, on-call or per diem personnel. In 2020, the Department responded to 2,033 EMS calls, 1,106 fire or other non-EMS calls for a total volume of 3,139 emergency calls. The annual operating budget is $7.6 million dollars.
The Chief is appointed by and reports to the Town Manager and is a member of the Town’s Leadership team. Candidates must have strong, innovative leadership, conflict resolution, planning and managerial skills combined with excellent interpersonal and communications skills and a sense of social responsibility. A proven, successful record of experience in progressively responsible supervisory, administrative and command assignments is required.
Minimum qualifications include: Bachelors’ Degree with major coursework in in Fire Science or Fire Administration or a related field; Master’s preferred; 10 years of fire suppression experience as a career member in a comparable fire and rescue department and at least 5 years of experience as a command officer in a comparable or larger organization. A comparable combination of education and experience will be considered.
Candidates must possess or can obtain New Hampshire or Pro Board Firefighter I/II, Fire Officer I/II certification, and ICS/NIMS Training through level 300/400. Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician required; higher level certification preferred. Hazardous materials technician preferred.
Candidates must have demonstrated experience and skill within the following critical areas; budgeting, crafting collaborative interagency relationships, labor management relations in a unionized environment, pacing change, fireground management, incident command and emergency management. Consideration will be given to graduates of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program (EFOP).
Salary range is $110,000 to $129,000 depending upon qualifications and experience. Residency is required within 6 months of appointment.
