Rutland MA - Deputy Fire Chief

The Town of Rutland, Massachusetts (pop. 9,895) is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Deputy Fire Chief. Rutland is a rapidly growing central Massachusetts community located at the geographical center of the Commonwealth. The Department covers a total response area of 56.5 square miles (including providing EMS service in Oakham) and operates from a single station. The Department has an ISO rating of Class 4/4Y. The organization employs approximately 13 fulltime and 22 on-call employees with an operating budget of approximately 1.6 million. In 2022 the Department responded to 1,655 emergency calls.

Appointed by the Fire Chief and reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief serves as a key member of the Department’s management team. An Associate’s Degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, Homeland Security, Business or Public Administration is required (Bachelor’s preferred). This position has been authorized as a succession planning strategy to develop the next Rutland Fire Chief.

It is preferred that candidates have completed Mass Chief Fire Officer Training Program. Candidates are required to be ProBoard certified as Firefighter I/II, Fire Officer I/II and have Incident safety officer and hazardous materials training. Candidates should also be an EMT – B (paramedic preferred) and have completed NIMS ICS 100, 200 and 300. Candidates should be credentialed as a Massachusetts Fire Chief or have the ability to become credentialed upon appointment.

Candidates must have a minimum of ten years of related fire service experience and six years of supervisory experience within a career or combination department. The salary range is $99,050 – $112,985 plus benefits depending upon qualifications and experience. Anticipated start date: September 2023.
