Marlborough, Conn. (pop.6,155) is seeking an enthusiastic, proactive, community oriented leader to serve as its first Town Manager. The community approved a strong Town Manager position through the adoption of a comprehensive Town Charter revision that became effective in December of 2021. This quintessential New England community is located just 20 minutes from Hartford with its multiple cultural, medical, educational amenities and general proximity to train and airport regional assets. The community is within easy reach of both Boston and New York City. Additionally, the town is about an hour’s drive to many quaint seacoast villages and beaches along the CT and RI coast. Although largely a residential community, the town offers a rich blend of suburban and rural charm, and its residents are proud of the outstanding recreational opportunities centered around beautiful Lake Terramuggus, the very highly regarded school system, and the strong commitment to civic pride by its residents through active participation in numerous volunteer organizations and government boards.

The community has progressive leadership that strives to maintain the balance between encouraging growth opportunities and preserving its desirable rural characteristics. Exciting new expansion projects and commercial developments are underway as part of the vision for the town’s overall sustainability. Marlborough has approximately 23 square miles of land area and is bi-sectored by Route 66 and Route 2 which are major transportation arteries in the region. The town is governed by a 5-member Board of Selectmen with a Town Meeting form of governance. The new Manager will be responsible for 22 FTE’s as well as numerous PT employees and various seasonal hires. The overall operating budget is just over $27 million dollars, with Town Operations at $6 million; the balance of $21 million is apportioned between the elementary school, the regional Middle/High school levy, capital expenditures, and debt obligations. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills which are essential for success in this position and a commitment to providing excellent leadership.

Applicants who have graduated from an accredited college or university with a degree in government or public/ business administration with previous municipal management experience are preferred, but an equivalent combination of relevant experience, academic achievement, and training to achieve the successful performance of the job as determined by the Board of Selectmen will be considered.

Salary of $130,000 to $145,000 to be negotiated by the Select Board that will be dependent on the specific qualifications and experience of the candidate. The town also offers a competitive benefits package for the successful candidate.
